Troubleshooting Your System
Things to Check Before Calling
If your air conditioning or heating equipment is not operating correctly, try these first. If the problem is not found, call for service.
Symptom Possible Cause Remedy
Smell of natural gas around the system or anywhere in the home.
  1. Gas leak. This is a very serious condition. Use extreme caution.
  1. Leave the home immediately and call Questar Gas from a cell phone or neighbor's phone. Do not turn on or off any lights or electrical equipment, light matches, or do anything that may cause sparks.
Insufficient heating or air conditioning.
  1. Dirty filters.
  2. Air not circulating freely.
  3. Blocked outdoor coil.
  1. Check filters, replace if necessary.
  2. Check supply registers and return grills for blockage.
  3. Clear away debris to allow air flow.
System does not operate.
  1. Power switch off.
  2. Circuit Breaker off or fuse blown.
  3. Thermostat off or not adjusted.
  1. Make sure power switch at furnace is in the on position.
  2. Ensure that the circuit breaker is in the on position. If in the middle position, turn it off and back on. If it goes to the middle position again, an electrical problem exists. Call your service technician. If your power box has fuses, make sure the heater or air conditioner fuse is not blown. If it is, replace it. If it blows again, an electrical problem exists. Call your service technician.
  3. Make sure your thermostat is set to the on position and the temperature is adjusted.
No heating or air conditioning.
  1. Blower compartment door missing or not shut all the way.
  1. Blower door must be shut for safety. Shut blower door completely to activate safety switch.
Unusual noise.
  1. Loose covers or external parts.
  1. Check for loose parts. Use caution - do not touch electrical equipment. Do not touch anything around exhaust vents.
